What Kind of Jobs Can You Get Paid to Travel?
The
most common entry level travel jobs are positions for tour guides,
adventure guides, tour directors and tour managers. The job
responsibilities for each of those positions can vary significantly from
one company to the next, and so can the training required.
Generally,
tour guides live and work in one city or destination and share their
knowledge about that destination with people who travel there on guided
tours, but some tour guides travel with a group from one city to
another. Skills for tour guides and training for tour guides are almost
always provided through on-the-job training. That doesn’t mean you can’t
get a leg up on the competition for a tour guide job by learning all
you can about the travel industry and the cities in which you want to
work.
Adventure
guides head up adventure tours, a specialized type of travel that
provides an element of fun and engagement travelers don’t get on typical
tours. They generally travel with the tour group and have more
responsibility than a typical tour guide. They may be responsible for
ensuring that everyone on the tour is safe and has everything they need.
Adventures range from safari tours to working on a coffee plantation or building wells in a village.
Tour
managers also take more responsibility than tour guides. They may be
responsible for planning the logistics and connections for the entire
tour, or they may simply be responsible for shepherding the entire group
through the tour from city to city.
If
you want a job where you get paid to travel, it makes sense to look for
training that will help you understand the many responsibilities and
skills required in these travel careers.
While there is no degree program that will prepare you for these jobs,
the training you get will help you score the best travel jobs and start
you off on a fun and exciting career.
